77-year-old patient recovers motor function well after SuperPath hip replacement surgery

Today I would like to share the case of a 77-year-old female patient from Tuyen Quang. The patient came to see the doctor presenting with prolonged left hip pain, inability to move normally, and significant interference with her daily activities.

The patient was diagnosed with primary osteoarthritis of the left hip with multiple underlying medical conditions including diabetes mellitus, Parkinson's disease, hypertension, and obesity (BMI >30).

After a comprehensive evaluation through clinical examination and imaging, the patient was indicated for left total hip arthroplasty using the SuperPath approach, combined with cosmetic suture and application of biological tissue glue to minimize soft tissue trauma, reduce postoperative pain, and promote early functional recovery. Relevant laboratory tests and functional assessments for her underlying conditions were also performed to ensure surgical safety.

Performing surgery on such patients is a considerable challenge with the SuperPath technique due to limited intraoperative visualization, and the operative time may be prolonged. In addition, the postoperative use of biological tissue glue seems to entail more unpredictable risks. The preference of most surgeons remains traditional suturing and drain placement.
The surgery went smoothly; I achieved hemostasis and thoroughly inspected the area after closing the joint capsule with no signs of bleeding observed. Ultimately, I decided to use biological tissue glue after carefully assessing the risks.

After 2 weeks, she has recovered well, the surgical incision is dry and well-healed with no reported complications, and she is currently continuing rehabilitation exercises at home. Notably, the patient is now able to walk independently without the assistance of a walker or other assistive devices.

For elderly patients, regaining early mobility after surgery is of utmost importance. This not only helps improve their quality of life but also contributes to reducing the risk of complications associated with prolonged bed rest, such as pneumonia, pressure ulcers, or other dangerous complications.

Every case where a patient recovers smoothly and returns to daily life early is always a great motivation for the medical team. This is also the most important goal of modern hip replacement surgery: not only to treat the pathology but also to help patients recover early and regain independence in mobility.
